HSS1 Interactive Sessions

Three sessions, one patient panel.

You will be given a panel of 3,000 simulated patients. The same patients follow you through all three sessions, so what you learn about them in one session still holds in the next.

Sessions

Session 1

Population health and social determinants

Meet your panel. Who are they, what do they carry, and how does where someone lives shape how often they end up in an emergency department? No money in this session — deliberately.

Session 2

Healthcare finance and what a patient pays

Follow the money through one episode of care — from the patient, through the employer and insurer, to the health system and the clinician. Three clinical scenarios across eight kinds of coverage.

Open Session 2

Session 2 still asks for a campus, because it follows one patient rather than a panel — but the group code now carries across, so plays tag to the same class.

Session 3

Value-based care and payment models

The same panel, now with money attached. What did their care cost, what was paid for it, and what happens to a practice when the payment model — or the payer mix — changes underneath it?

Before you start

Every patient here is simulated. No real person is represented, and no real record was used to build any individual patient. The patterns they follow were drawn from a de-identified population, which is why the relationships are worth taking seriously — and why the individuals are not.

How the data was made, what it can and cannot support, and where every figure comes from is set out in the methods and provenance note.
